Storage in Dewsbury: your options compared

Search for storage in Dewsbury and you'll get a page of results that all look roughly the same: a price, a photo of a clean corridor, a button. What the results don't tell you is that they're not the same product. Some of them are a heated room inside a building you walk into. Some are a steel container you drive up to. One of them is a box that arrives on a lorry.

Those differences matter far more than the headline price, because they decide how easily you can get at your own things. Here's an honest look at the four options a Dewsbury searcher actually has.

1. A room inside an indoor self-storage building

This is what most people picture. You rent a room off a corridor inside a large heated building, you're buzzed in through reception, and you use the lifts and trolleys to move things in and out.

The trade-offs: access is usually tied to staffed hours, and you're carrying things from the car park to the lift to the corridor to your room. That's fine twice a year and tiring every week. The nearest indoor facilities to Dewsbury also tend to be a drive rather than round the corner, so check the journey before you check the price.

2. A drive-up container yard

You also want a vehicle. Drive-up is the whole point, and it's much less convenient if you're arriving on foot.

3. Mobile storage - they bring the box to you

A container or timber module is delivered to your door, you fill it, and it's taken away to a warehouse. When you want it back, it's delivered again.

Good at: a one-way move where you genuinely won't need anything in the meantime. Packing at your own pace on your own driveway is a real advantage, and you never drive to a yard at all.

The trade-offs: access is the catch. Getting to your things usually means booking a visit to their warehouse or paying for redelivery, so it works badly for anyone who dips in and out. You also need somewhere legal to park the module while you load it, which is not a given on a terraced street.

4. A lock-up, garage or farm building

The informal option: a private garage, a railway arch, a barn, a unit behind someone's yard - usually found through word of mouth or a local ad.

Good at: being cheap, and occasionally being very close to home.

The trade-offs: this is the one to be careful with. Ask what the security actually is, whether the building is genuinely dry, whether there's any insurance in place, and what happens if the owner sells up. Plenty of these are fine. The ones that aren't tend to reveal it in February, when you open the door and find out what condition your things are in. Get whatever you agree in writing.

• One-way move, no access needed, no vehicle - mobile storage is worth quoting.
• A few boxes and a bike - the smallest option you can find. An 8ft container or a small indoor room; don't pay for a 20ft you'll rattle around in.
